I have a Dell XPS 8000 with Windows 7 Home Premium. I’d like to know if it’s possible to do a clean install to Windows 7 Pro from the $29.99 student discount (http://www.microsoft.com/student/discoun… Has anyone done that?

Yes, this is possible to go from Windows 7 Home Premium to Windows 7 Pro, and it will clear your hard drive, to back up your files on an external hard drive (which you knew).
