Question by jory49: Where can I find a free online tutor for pre-algebra?
I started college for the first time in Aug. ‘06. I am 57 yrs old. I am struggling with the math. It is pre-algebra. I can’t find a tutor in my area except for one day a week for 90 minutes. I have a learning disabiltiy. I am not failing yet, but very close. I need someone with a whole lot of patience and understanding and as important as those are, someone with a sense of humor.

If you look on http://www.brainpop.com and join a free 12 day membership, you can see a video of how to do it for free.

You can go to hotmath.com and you can sign up for free, i think. anyways, you go the college section of math and you can probably find the textbook you are using in school. They will explain all the even numbered problems and how the answer was given.

i’m in the 9th grade, and i take algebra I. i’m pretty sure i can help you with whatever problems you have with prealgebra. just post a question about the problem you are having difficulties with. or try sylvan.com or brainpop.com

First of all, MEGA CONGRATULATIONS for taking this brave and courageous step!!!!
I can’t suggest a “free, online tutor” (I don’t even think such a thing exists), but I can tell you that when my daughter (who is 15 and is math-challenged; it must be genetic) needs help with her algebra homework, she just goes to google and types in “math help” and usually finds several sites to help her. Are you dyslexic? Does your teacher know this? Can you ask the teacher for some online resources? I have a gf who also recently started college (she’s near 40), and is on her way to fulfilling her dream of becoming an architect. She is dyslexic, and I know how difficult schoolwork can be for her. I asked her about your question, and she said the best advice she could offer was to take your time and re-read everything. I know that sounds overly simplistic……I wish you all the best. Please don’t throw in the towel. You’ll get through this. Older students typically succeed because they are so determined!
