What’s a college job for a social work major?

College Jobs
People keep telling me to find a job that works with my major. I can’t figure out what a good job is that is in the social work field. I want to become a medical social worker or work with children or women’s shelters.
These type of jobs don’t hire you unless you have a degree already though. Any ideas?

Any type of job at a hospital or nursing home would be good. You could be a theraputic aide on the psychiatric floor, desk clerk or an activities assistant at the nursing home. It will give you an inside look at how health care works and you will also already have your foot in the door when you go to look for a real job after college.

Any job working with people will be relevant – so getting a job in a youth program in any area would be good (e.g. “Y” or after school program, homework help, etc.). Also any job with elderly (including meals on wheels, day program, etc.). At your level of practice, these experiences will help you get a better field placement, which can lead to better jobs.
