What should I do in my job search?

College Tutoring
I graduated from college in 2000 with a B.A. in Spanish. Since then, I have worked mostly dead-end retail jobs, though currently I am working part-time as a Spanish tutor in a college. Soon I am going to begin drawing unemployment benefits, but I would like to get a job as soon as possible. That being said, though, I want to get a job that is commensurate with my educational level and I want to stop working in retail. Should I try finding a retail job, so that I can work in the meantime while I try to find something better, or should I keep trying for the next few months to get a better job while I’m drawing unemployment?

Well public schools look for teachers to teach students Spanish. The Unemployment unit in your town, should guide you on what jobs to apply for.
Whatever you do, DO NOT UNDERSELL YOURSELF!

Well with a B.A. in Spanish why not at least apply for asst. mgr. at a Walmart? Then work your way up.

tang, I first majored in French and Philosophy in school…and then I realized that I would be philosophizing on a street corner in Paris with a hat to collect change. The point being…language alone is not enough to get a job. HAve you considered some additional schooling? Perhaps 1 1/2 years of teaching certification? Another option is the hospitality industry…sometimes i hire someone just because they speak spanish, and then train them to cook, or whatever else. Your abiltiy to speak spanish makes you a great commodity for my industry. Perhaps consider taking a certification in food and beverage management…a class with a test at the end to certify you. It qualifies you for food and beverage director. You can get a job in any hotel, and make better than an executive chef. i myself am going to take that course, since executive chef is really the highest I can go. Either way, life is too short to do soemthing you hate, and retail is definitely one step below hospitality! You guys get no respect, and I don;t blame you for wanting something better, since you already went to school. Well, good luck, and if you need additional info on anything, email me.

I think you should teach. If you don’t want to do that though, provided that your Spanish is good enough you could be a translator, or you could work in government. If you have an interest in criminal justice you could even go and work for the US Coast Guard or you could become a state trooper. You have thousands of open doors and one closed one. The closed one being retail.
And remember: You have something that not everyone has. You have a degree.

You could be a foreman at a landscaping company.
Most of the workers don’t speak English.
