What major should i choose for college?

College Selection
I am very good at trumpet. And being a music major sounds great. But i heard its a very difficult career choice. There is a small chance that i will even be able to make it in the music industry. But it is something that i love but it would make me little to know money unless i became famous. Or i would major in Engineering, (Mechanical or Aerospace). This may be just as enjoyable. I know it would make me a whole lot more money but i don’t know if i would love it as much as music. What do you think i should choose?

Why not just keep music as a side hobby? If you become an engineer you can still go home and play the trumpet. Maybe even join a band on the side. If you become a musician, I am quite sure there isn’t going to be a lot of opportunities to do engineering on the side.

Engineering is a very good career choice, mostly for the money. If you’re a music major you could alot of things…
You could be a music teacher, give private lessons, music/band director….I think there’s more options than you think about as a music major. The money you will make is not quite as good though but it’s not like you’ll be in poverty.

You could always double major in engineering and music, though it might take you an extra year to graduate. That way, you could work as an engineer if a music career doesn’t work out or you decide that you’d rather not pursue music full time. Or, you could major in engineering and take music lessons/play in a band as a hobby.

Music is a deceptively difficult field to make a real living in. It’s best not to get yourself involved especially if you have a choice to go into something else.

It’s tough: to be practical or to follow your passion…
now that’ll be a lucrative career.
ME major does not guarantee “more money.” it only means the income is more steady as a regular job. Many musicians make big bucks at various gigs but that’s not every day. if you truly have the talent in trumpet, there are many opportunities… orchestras, concerts, teacher, Julliard. who knows, you could be the next Dizzy or Davis
