What is the best way to prepare my child for a selective high school or a scholarship test to private school?
Question by Yueya: What is the best way to prepare my child for a selective high school or a scholarship test to private school?
Is it a coaching college? Which one would you recommend?
Is it a private tutor? How to find a good one?
What worked for you?

Well, im assuming you mean the selective high school test for sydney, australia, but if you dont then sorry, cant help.
i remember when i took the test i used:
Swot shop – they teach you in classes, so its not private tutoring, but its competitive, they have tests, homework, excercises and if your child can keep up its worth while ( dont be discouraged if you child doesnt pass the entrance exam to swot shop, my brother didnt and he still got into the third top school)

Pre-uni – they’re are many Pre uni centres in sydney, and not only do they do selective school coaching, they do coaching for HSC and regular coaching too. I found this one worked better for me, probably because they’re only about 5 or 4 students in a class and the teacher can give you more attention. Apart from coaching in individual subjects, as far as I know they have two programs for selective coaching (again, you’ll have to ring them up because this may be a bit out-dated) one is a very long one, in which they cover the subjects GA (general ablilty), Reading & comprehension, Writing, and math (all the subjects they test you in the selective test) they give you homework, textbooks, etc, like a normal class, except much more advanced and effective. and the other is a test class in which they give you tests on the 4 subjects and then check them togetehr and go through the answers. Both courses are on different days, so i find more helpful to take both… i really enjoyed it, and it really helped me improve on the subects i wasnt good at. ( i was really bad at GA before i took the courses, but I ended up scoring really good on it, so it works!)

North shore coaching – You’ll have to ring up them because i dont really have much information on them. My brother (same one mentioned earlier) got through to Baulkham hills high school (number 3 at the time) using this and pre uni. It basically uses the same methods as Pre-uni.

OC class – if your child goes to a school where you can enter the OC class, then i reccommend you do, because they can be very rewarding and are unlitmately very effective.
Well… those are the ones i used… and i got into the 2nd highest selective school (at the time) and a scholarship into Roseville…..so they worked for me, but it depends on your child individually, and if you feel as if the coaching classes dont work, then you should use a private tutor instead. Because some kids tend to work better by themselves than in a group, so its up too you, Good luck for your child on the test, i hope they get through!
