What is the best laptop for a student?

I am a student looking for a good laptop that will be used to do homework, surf the web and probably have music on there. I am looking somewhere in the $800-$1000 range. I know about HP and Apple’s student discounts but I am unsure if I should get a PC or an Apple because of crappy Vista. I have always had PCs and normally I like them.

First of all, Vista isn’t a reason to get Apple. Vista is just a reason to not get Vista. Depending on what you really want to do, you may consider an Asus eee. It’s extremely durable, lightweight, and has base 3 hour life. It’s a 7″, though, so it’s not for those with sausage link fingers.
