A scholarship is basically free money. You win a scholarship based on many things ranging from sports to academics. Sometimes the university gives you a scholarship too. If you have to pay to get the scholarship, like for the application or something of the sort, don’t do it. Scholarships are free to apply. If someone asks for a fee to help you find scholarship, don’t do that either. It’s a scam.
I’m going to guess you meant Berkeley in California, right? You can look them up on collegeboard:
http://collegesearch.collegeboard.com/search/CollegeDetail.jsp?collegeId=988&type=qfs&skey=university%20of%20california
You can pretty much find what you want to know about the school there. If not, look on their official website. Right now get into some solid clubs, do community service, get good grades, take the SAT when you end Junior year. Also, that college requires Subject Tests so take both the SAT and the Subject tests at the end of your Junior year, then you can re-take them the start of your senior year.
SAT and the SAT II: Subject Tests are two different types of tests. The SAT is known as the SAT I or Reasoning Test. It’s basically what everyone takes. Then there’s the Subject Tests. It used to be called the SAT II, but now everyone just calls them the Subject Tests. They’re basically one hour tests on any subject you want like Biology, Literature, Spanish, Korean, Math I, Math II, and there are lots and lots more.
Sometimes the school wants you to take a test that has something to do with your major. Like if you were going to major in Chemistry, they want a Chemistry Subject Test score. This is not always the case, though, so check the school’s website to see what their policy on Subject Tests is. I know Berkeley requires them and so do many other schools, like all the Ivy Leagues. Strangely enough, Stanford doesn’t, though they recommend you take them.
People go to college to get a degree and a good job. Some jobs require you to have a college degree and you wouldn’t be able to get the job without them. If you’re happy working at Wal-Mart, then don’t go to college. It’s not necessary to go if you don’t want to. If you want to be a mechanic or a plumber, then go to a vocation school. Those guys make good money. Mostly I feel people go to college because it’s what they think they should do and don’t really know what they want to do.
It’s okay not to have your whole life planned out right now, but if you really feel college isn’t for you, then don’t go because it’ll just be a waste of money and time. You can pretty much get any job if you go to college, though some might require as much as 10+ years of a university education. So then you need a PhD.
