What came after getting your bachelor’s degree? Were you able to find a job in your major? I’m curious!
Question by GoriGirl: What came after getting your bachelor’s degree? Were you able to find a job in your major? I’m curious!
Did you go straight into a career? Did you spend months in your parents home trying to find that great paying job while you worked in retail? Did you get married and be a stay at home mommy or daddy?
I just recently graduated college, and have found that finding the job I wanted is extremely tough, if not near impossible. The age old question comes into play…”how do you get experience, if every job requires it to begin with?”
I’d love to hear your stories and advice.

You are now in a new chapter of your life. You are in the job market. This is a journey which need you to take challenges and lots of hard work. The first step is to look for jobs that commensurate with your qualification. And take whatever offer or position given to you.

I graduated from college with a BA in Business Administration May 2007. The job market is super competitive. It took me 1 full year to find a job. I currently have a seasonal job in HR. The pay is not great nor do I receive benefits, but the experience is great. When I graduated from college I thought life was going to be great. I thought I was going to make at least $33,000 or I wasn’t going to take “the job” Well that attitude kept me waiting tables for 1yr. I have learned to be patient and work hard and take whatever to get valuable experience. I know for a fact that I have applied to 325 jobs over the last year and 10 interviews. Very low results. My college mates are still working at Macy’s and temp jobs. I met a HR manager for Capital One while I was serving and I was telling him that I thought I should get a MBA to stay competitive. He told me he didn’t even consider new MBA’s for Mid-Senior level jobs. He wants people with experience and great references. He had a BS in Business and worked hard for years before he reached the status he is now. I have taken his advice and made it my own. I’m working hard in everything I do. I understand that it’s going to take a while to get where I want to be but time will be guide. I was reading a newspaper article that stated Bachelor’s degrees are not as valuable as they use to be. Good luck to you in your employment searches. Look for opportunities where you can see yourself move up in the company. If you want to work in HR- look for jobs as an HR Assistant and HR manager but expect to be assistant 1st. apply to HR jobs your over qualified/ under qualified and make it work for you
