Question by moonscarredwolf: What are some ways I can get money for college?
Okay, so my mom basically just dumped on me at the last minute (I’m a senior in high school) that she isn’t financially able to put me through college. I know there are student loans out there, but is there anything else I can do to reduce the overall cost/get money?

I totally know where you are coming from.
First off, fastweb.com is your friend– but your high school counseler is your BEST friend. He/she will have access to all the scholarships that are sent to the high school. You need to talk to them the first day of school, and you need to talk to them EVERY WEEK. I know it’s hard, but if you do this, they will get to know you, and you will end up being able to apply for more. Secondly, look around town for scholarships. I got $5,700 in scholarships from little clubs in town.
Fill out the FAFSA, don’t be upset when the expected family contribution is way higher than you expect- it is for everyone. When you actually get to college, your first stop on campus (after the dorm) is the financial aid office. A job while you are in high school is great, and I would recommed an on-campus job, especailly if they have a work-study program in your financial package (it makes you more attractive to hire)–only 10 hours a week, which is great for your studies, but it’s still a little money coming in.
One of the biggest things to remember is NOT to nickle and dime yourself– no, you may not go to Sonic, or buy things you don’t need. You will be amazed at how much money you save by not spending it.
I hope this helps, e-mail me if you have more questions!
