Q&A: Why can’t I pass College Mathematics?
Question by funnyman: Why can’t I pass College Mathematics?
Im a senior in film school, and have been going part-time for seven years now. I have excellent grades, and have maintained a 3.4 GPA. However, this semester I am taking College Mathematics, and I am afraid I won’t pass. Math has always been a weak subject for me, and I find it tedious that everything else I do (writing, reading, liberal science, etc), I do fine in. But math is not my high point. What if I can’t pass? I have to take a College Mathematics course (1), to get my degree.
Tutoring doesn’t work for me- I just can’t get statistics and trig and all that jazz down. Worst of all- the teacher is a by-the-book square, who wouldn’t even accept homework from me and another student late, even though we had been placed in this class late- with letters from our counselors! He said “Well whose problem is that? It wouldn’t be fair to the other students.” So he gave us a 0 for the homework. Which means he’s not a lenient teacher. How can I pass this? I am really worried here.
I think people are missing the point of this question. I don’t care about math! It has nothing to do with my major. Im a screenwriting major! Im trying to find out how I can talk to a counselor and have them waive the math course so I don’t have to take it. One of my co-workers said she was allowed to take an additional science w/lab instead of math, because she was so bad at the latter. And she got her degree. Im trying to figure out if I can do something similar. Practice doesn’t make perfect if you dont get math! Ask anyone trying to be a scientist who doesn’t care about science- their just not gonna care or get it.

well, best thing is to practice- don’t do only the assigned homework, but do extra problems. if you need help, ask for help, and don’t wait until right before the test. at the first sight you feel you are getting behind, get some help. work in groups on homework outside of class- talk about the problems, don’t just copy the problems from one person. but if you talk about the steps, you may be able to find you can understand it better.
Good Luck

I have the same problem. English, writing, reading, science, history, and so on have always been easy for me. However, I suck at math. It took forever to pass one of the college math classes, and then I dropped the statistic math class. I have to take two more in order to graduate in two years, but I have a feeling it will be hell. It seems that I have to focus on that ONE subject just to get a passing grade. A root canal might be less painful.
Good luck, buddy. It sucks.

Sounds to me like you are defeating yourself before you even entered the class. I teach film and broadcasting courses at a small college and I found that my majors entered the major because they though erroneously that they would not have to take another math course. The first time they had to figure out the amps they would need to run lights or the critical area of a graphic or use the inverse square law or plot a motion graphic along the Z axis or use the algorithms in depth of field chart among other calculations, they get a wake-up call. I think part of the problem is that you guys need to have the purpose of math in regard to your major hit you right in the face. Have you tried asking your teacher for help? Swallow your pride and go see him during his office hours and ask for help. And quit giving yourself a failing grade before your grades are in.
