Q&A: Where could I study Behavioral/Psychological Profiling without attending 2/4 year college or home study?
Question by hessosui: Where could I study Behavioral/Psychological Profiling without attending 2/4 year college or home study?
I am personally interested in understanding behavioral profiling, for applications outside of criminal justice/or law. Where would I be able to study behavioral sciences in a classroom setting or tutoring without going to college? Most sources I find specifically target criminals, where I am interested in more of social and society based application….any resources?
I should be a tad more clear, I understand television acts as an amplifier for interesting topics. Hence why there are so many Cop/PI shows… So this is in no way whim to become a part of the cast of CSI or earn a seat on Run Away Juror II. What I am interested in is simply the interworkings of human behavior for real-world applications such as Business, Coaching, Sales, and other situations which would beniefit from understanding and “profiling” people quickly or over extended periods. Again, my questions was to find out if there where any resources outside of an institution. Much like there are many credible schools for investing, real estate, business and technology you can attend outside of University setting..I have been unable to locate. While I am very interested in general psychology, my inquiry was to find a source I could attend and learn exactly what I am curious about without learning from the net/going to college/ or studying at Barnes and Noble.

Been watching C.S.I./Law&Order?
You don’t want to deal with criminals?
Psychological Diagnostician, then?
Just major in behavioral psychology, a.k.a psychology.
Extensive psychology studies should give you exactly what you need to “profile” someone’s behavior….

You’re probably not going to find much of anything as almost all such programs are going to be tied to either two or four year institutions.
I’d recommend social psychology or sociology courses at your local community college, if you just have a passing interest, without trying to fulfill degree requirements. If you want to somehow make a job out of it, well it depends on what you want to do with that. If you want to do research and study questions like that, you’re looking at at least a Master’s degree, minimum.

Need at least a master’s degree/ preferably Ph.D. There are extensive research skills and knowledge of statistical analysis in profiling. (TV is not accurate protrayal) (former US FED/DC/psychologist..college prof)

You can take community college classes without going for a degree. I know somebody that just takes one class a semester, and she can take whatever she wants (you do have to be of a certain level reading and writing to take regular courses).
You can do reading on psychological websites, or even take out the psychology textbooks that interest you from the library.
Abnormal psychology is a pretty cool course, but if you take it in a community college, you have to take Psych 101 first, which is good, you understand Abnormal much better that way.
