Question by Kikka: I don’t know how to choose a college! Please help!!?
I’m going into 10th grade, and I want to build a list of colleges that I would like to aim for, just so that I have a general idea and all. But I really don’t know how to choose colleges! I want to major in chemistry (or something related to that), and I know Berkely has a good chemistry department, but so far, that’s my only choice. Does anybody have any tips on what to look at while selecting prospective colleges? I live in CA, but I don’t care where the college is, nor it’s size or anything like that. However, I am concerned about the cost of college, so I am looking for scholarship option. But that really leaves me with WAY to may choices! How can I narrow these down? Does anyone have any suggestions for colleges great in chem/sciences? Thank you!! :-)

If you have really great grades/test scores you can school for MIT or CalTech. Harvey Mudd (an engineering school, andone of the Claremont schools near LA) might also be a good fit. Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo might also have a good chem program (though that’s a guess on my part). In general though if you want a mix of quality and affordability the UCs are hard to beat. Again if you expect to do well apply to Berkley, UCLA and UC San Diego, with UC Santa Barbara and UC Santa Cruz as backups. Whichever you get into you’ll at least be in a nice area.

Also you can get one of those massive ‘every college you could possibly want to go to and a lot you don’t’ books. They’re fun to flip through.
