Q&A: How can I connect with homeschooling parents wanting support in math?
Question by Jill: How can I connect with homeschooling parents wanting support in math?
I am a tutor in the Washington DC area, tutoring mostly high school math. During the day I teach math at a local community college. I’d like to tutor more during school hours and I suppose working with homeschooled kids is the way to do it — but I don’t know how to connect with parents in need of this service. I’d love to work with kids either individually or in groups.
Can anyone suggest a way to find parents who have this need?
Thanks.

The best way for you to find homeschooling parents with this need is to contact the homeschool support groups in your area. Contact them by e-mail or phone. Tell them the services that you offer and they will pass the information by word of mouth or they would put your information in their newsletters or post it on their websites. You can search “homeschool support groups washington dc” on google or check out these two sites to find groups in your area. –

I feel like you will definitely find some parents who need a math tutor. It’s just a matter of getting the word out. Once all the homeschoolers in your area find out about you, you will get good business. Also, you can post your services for free on craigslist. –

Hi Jillellenh,
Yahoo group searches can be helpful as well. There is a specific one called Baltimore Washington Home Educators. Try contacting them – connect through the list owner, offering your services, as you do not want to seem like a “hound”. It also works well when you package and offer a particular course for multiple students – that can be very appealing.
Good Luck – and remember, many homeschoolers need help with math!
