The Web is full of scholarship search sites, some legitimate, some with questionable practices in terms of selling your name to loan companies and credit card companies.

As general advice, don’t pay for scholarship search services. There are plenty of free resources, and some paid services are scams.

Two sites that are “clean” and worthy of using (both are free, by the way) are http://www.fastweb.com and http://www.collegenet.com/mach25 These sites work by having you fill out a profile about yourself, then e-mailing you with potential scholarship matches.

Beyond Web-based searches, don’t overlook your high school college planning/guidance office as a resource for local scholarships. Keep in mind that these scholarships are often also open to current college students, a fact that is generally overlooked. If you receive a local scholarship, write a thank you note, and check to see if you can reapply in future years.

Colleges, particularly private colleges, often offer scholarships, as well. My alma mater, Carthage, offers scholarships based on academics, as well as scholarships for math and science majors, French majors, German majors, debate competitors, students in art, music or theatre. They even offer full ride scholarships for strong academic students who are also well-rounded in terms of extracurriculars. More info at http://www.carthage.edu/scholarships

Many private colleges offer academic scholarships and scholarships in niche areas, so it is worth checking with a variety of schools and reading through college brochures that are mailed to you, and on Web sites, of course.
