College Selection
I am a junior in high school and i am starting to think about colleges. I know the obvious thing is to ask my guidance councelor but my guidance councelor isnt very helpful. Could someone please tell me how i could get started looking for colleges? I am interested in zoology,pre-vet medicine, etc. if that helps or makes a difference. Positive input would be appreciated.
THANKS

Where do YOU want to study? Near home? Far away? Do you like big? Would you prefer a smaller intimate environment?
What you NEED is a bachelors degree that fulfills the admissions requirements into a veterinary medicine school. Which vet school do you plan/want to attend? UC-Davis, Texas A & M, Wisconsin? Have you seen their entrance requirements?
My niece is in vet med school and she began her college career at a community college. Good Luck.

Most people end up going to colleges and universities close to where they live, so I would check out the local schools to start with. For public schools, you will get in-state tuition, which is usually substantially lower than out-of-state tuition. If you know your GPA and SAT/ACT score, you can see what schools you might be able to get into by looking at their stats on websites like princetonreview.com. collegeconfidential.com has an excellent forum for aspiring college students and current college students, you can look and see if the colleges you are interested in have their own board under the colleges section. If you plan to post a follow-up question, you may want to post the state you are in, as well as your GPA and scores so we can be more helpful.

Doctor of Veterinary Medicine is a professional graduate degree program. A 4 year degree with the required pre requisite classes is necessary to apply. It is honestly not possible to make recommendations without knowing your HS curriculum, GPA and SAT/ACT and SAT Subject Test Scores, and the amount you are thinking of paying out of pocket every year. If you have not yet taken the standardized tests, you need to look into doing so soon. SAT subject tests, if required, should be scheduled as closely as possible to the final or AP exam in the course.
Most students decide if they want to go to a public or private university. It usually is not a good idea to go to an out of state public university because the fees charged tend to be much higher than for state residents and most public universities don’t have the money to offer generous financial packages. Then make sure to enroll in the required or recommended courses for the universities decided upon. Start by taking a look at the best public universities in your state, and any nearby private universities, whichever state they might be located.
This is great advice for any student prepping for any selective university, though it might have been more helpful if your guidance counselor had given such guidance before Freshman year:
