Question by Yay!: I need money for college, how can I find financial aid?
I plan to transfer into a university or college as soon as I get my associates degree from a community college. I’m not getting money from my parents and I am not a US citizen. I want to get at least a masters degree in psychology but I don’t have the money for it. I’ve looked up a few sites to help me, but they require a social security number, which I don’t have.

Look on the web for scholarships. There are also scholarships available for students studying in this country who are not US citizens.

A lot of schools base their financial aid on need (they look at your income and your assets- if you do not have much of either your package should be pretty full).
Apply to the schools you want to go and see what aid package they offer you once you get in. This is the most direct way and will probably result in in the most money. If you are still going to fall short, work with the admissions department and/or a financial aid officer at the school you have been accepted to. . . Factor in the cost of books, room and board and travel- especially if you are going to school out of state.
Colleges know they are a lot of money and are usually pretty good about trying to make things work out for you.
As far as grad school is concerned, there are fellowship programs and vast loan offers. Just be careful, you will have to pay off you loans at some point in your life.

You bring up a great point. Not being a citizen could be a problem but I would at least try it. I went to a private college and they offered all students some sort of grant/loan combo outside of federal aid. . . .

Ah, not being a citizen could be a problem. It’s possible that state colleges would be required to consider you, even though you are not a citizen. And, of course, private colleges can choose to do what they want. Usually, you file a federal form called a FAFSA and have it sent to colleges so they can determine what aid you are eligible for, but I don’t know if you can do that without a Social Security number.

Edit: Normal–what you say is true, but do you know if that applies to non-citizens with no Social Security number? I’m not sure about that.

FAFSA.ed.gov You have to be a U.S citizen for Federal Aid, but fill out the app anyway because you might be eligible for state or college fin aid just enter your Alien Registration Number. Have you looked up scholarships on College Board or FastWeb? There’s always the option of loans. Will you be working while in school? Remember the sticker price of the college is not always the price you pay.
