College Selection
My three ideas are: credit card debt affecting young people, eating disorders and depending on prescription drugs.. Which topic do you like the best? What should I bring up on the topic? Any creative ideas for a viusal aid? Or any different topics?

Use the topic “Pepsi or Coke”

Credit card debt is good. Show reasons why. Like how expensive school is and how books cost so much. That is a good reason why. By the way you’re hot

Legalization of Marijuana
Take a “sample” and let everyone smoke up so they can see how NON-dangerous it is…that will persuade them!

I like the Credit Card one, but they are all good. For a visual aide, I am NO Reagan fan, but he made a very good speach where he talked about the federal defiit, where he stated how high a stak of $100 billls would be.. or something like that.

none of these are persuasive topics. you want the listener to do something. you want them to feel motivated to act upon what you said. try recycling, something worth while. you need to persuade them to do something. none of these topics do that.

Why everyone should try posting a picture of their actual face draped by half-naked boobs and trying to seduce everyone on the net, while choosing the screen-name “Austin’s girlfriend”.
That would be an excellent and informative speech. Persuade us as to why we should all mimic that modus operandi.
I bet Austin feels so cherished.

I like the credit card debt one, but you’ll have to write it in the context of persuading others to avoid credit cards. The other two are good, but I think that people don’t always understand how important managing their finances are. As college students, you are a target of those companies, and your peers should avoid them at all costs.
I think as a visual aid I would take a bunch of empty cardboard boxes and label them “Best Buy, “Circuit City,” and so on and so forth. Have someone sit next to the boxes and tell you all the neat stuff they like to buy and write those places on the boxes. Then when there is a good sized stack, knock them over onto the person. That should be illustrative and fun.

Okay, first Austin’s a lucky man. Just had to get that out there. Now, to the question. Try to pick something that has a larger effect and can stir up some controversy in the class. Try persuading your classmates to abandon the bipartisan system, or illegalize corporate lobbying. Maybe convince them to boycott speeding tickets, which don’t prevent accidents. Anything you can speak passionately about will go over fantastically.

How about gay marriage. One way or the other…it really doesn’t matter for purposes of the paper. This is a very hot topic right now and there is quite a bit of information available. Regardless of how you feel on the topic, you can show off your persuasion skills by choosing a subject that is a little more entertaining than credit card debt or eating disorders (I think we would all agree that credit card debt and eating disorders are bad).
Topics that you could raise with gay marriage: Legal basis for it? Should religion play a part in the decision? Is there a difference between civil unions and religious marriage? Does the government have a right to make this determination? Is marriage a fundamental right or it is a state granted right?
I think this would be some work, but if done correctly, it could be a very intriguing speech.

If you want to be more specific, why not discussing eating disorders for specific groups of individuals. Compare females to males, athletes to non-athletes, various athlets (i.e. ballet dancers (which has very high anorexia) to another group.
I think something along the lines of eating disorders is a good oen because it’s big in society right now. Other areas are: the increase of overweight children nowadays and the causes of it (some schools now prohibit vending machines and have students use cards that have restrictions on what they can buy from the cafeteria) Does this affect self-esteem? Does it enourage or discourage eating disorders?
Visual aids are important. Maybe use a powerpoint presentation to highlight key points (make it breif), some picture (esp if you are looking at disorders like anorexia..you could have a timeline of a person who is a normal weight and how they progress to anorexia). Also, consider eating disorders and popular media. Recently a model died from anorexia, is this her choice or pressure to conform?

I’d go with the credit card idea. It is very relevant to young people today and has a huge impact on them long term. You can probably find articles on this via google news.
I don’t think young people are very personal finance saavy. In a couple of years, they are going to want to buy homes and cars. Having a bad credit rating or execessive credit can halt these dreams from coming true.

I like the credit cards affecting youg people…like myself I got a couple of credit cards right outta high school and ran them up in charges. 6 years later I am just now getting them completely payed off.

If I were doing this presentation I would choose depending on prescription drugs. Our society makes us dependent on prescription drugs..if your shy take a drug, if your fat take a drug, cant sleep take a drug, cant stay awake take another drug, can’t gete it up take a drug, heck there are drugs for everyhting and the marketing is so sneaky they know how to advertise to make perfectly normal people think they need these things..it used to be if you were afraid to talk in a group u were shy now you have social anxiety..take a drug, and I have a really good spoof idea to represent how ridiculous society has become… if you have a camcorder and a few friends tape a mock commercial for a drug called idioway..have a girl walk down a street and run into a telephone pole and have a guy stick his tongue to an ice cube and it gets stuck or just a few stupid idiotic situations and then have a narrarator say everybody has days like these, now you don’t have to…with idioway.. and explain that it is a drug to suppress idiotic behavior. who knows in this day and age I might actually be on to something people just might purchase that!
