How To Find Your First Job After Graduating College?

I’m going to graduate college in less than a year, and am already getting stressed about finding a good job. I will graduate with a degree in Communications and minor in Econ. I want to go into human resources… I have some experience with basic clerical work, and have had one summer internship in finance (found out i didn’t like it)
I am also open to other careers, because I’m still not positive what I want to do! Maybe public relations, or working for the city/county…
Any ideas on what I might do, and how to get a job?

Work, work, work! The best way to find out what you do like is by knowing what you don’t like [i.e. finance]. Check out your local Chamber of Commerce or yellow pages and look for businesses or positions that sound interesting. Call and tell them who you are and ask for temp. work, or at the least a lunch date during which they could fill you in on what to expect. Find someone doing what you might like to do and ask them how. Many successful people love to help go-getters get connected. Be pro-active, because when you graduate, hundreds of others will be graduating, too.

Don’t go into it with unrealistically high expectations. You will not walk out of college and into a stellar career earning 65k annually. Realistically, you’ll get into an entry-level position likely earning no more than 22-28k annually. In some instances, it is possible to start out earning over 30k.
Consider your options, begin networking in fields you’re interested in, speak with companies you may be interested in, and consult your college job placement center. Polish your resume and make yourself shine. The resume alone is a marketing tool about yourself (FYI – do NOT use utilize in your resume). Keep your options open and with an open mind.
