This completely depends on the university you are going to. You should be going to a orientation before registration where they will give you all of this information, tell you how to register, and provide pre-registration advising to help you pick the classes you should take for your degree. I would not recommend registering for the first time without getting assistance from an advisor. That’s what they are there for!

you will most likely meet with your adviser at an orientation to make up your first schedule. Usually there are prerequisites required for the classes higher up. Sometimes you can take a 200 class as a freshmen, it depends on the program. Usually the 100 classes are considered the introductory classes. It really depends on your school.

Courses are numbered to let you know what level it is. Each school has their own numbering system but generally speaking 100 – Freshman, 200 Sophomore, 300 – Juniors, and 400 – 500 Seniors. Normally to take anything above 100 you will need to have prerequisites that are listed in the catalog. If there are no prerequisites listed for a specific course that is numbered above 100 you could take it. However the question becomes are you better off waiting?
To answer your question you ask if you could take a 200 listed class as a freshman. In my freshman year I took Calculus 1 and statistics which were a 200 level class at my school. So to answer your question you can take a 200 level class provided you meet any of the prerequisites stated. However depending on the class you might be better off waiting until you have completed your freshman year.
