how much do you pay for college and does this affect the way you choose?
Question by Sunshine again: how much do you pay for college and does this affect the way you choose?
im at university in England and we pay 3145pounds (,710) a year (that’s a set amount for any university even if you go to the best one in England, but obviously you still need the grades to get into them) pretty good really and the government pays it all for you each year and you pay them back when you get a job (e.g. if you earn ,000 a year you would have to pay the government just a month out of that, you pay back a bit more the more money your earn but you get the pattern and if you earn less than ,000 you don’t have to give them any money at all even if that means never paying them back, obviously though the hope is that someone with a degree will get a good paying job) are state college’s or universities free in America or do you have to pay a little? and how much would you have to pay if you went to say Harvard? which way do you think is better? i personally think that the English system gives more people a chance to attend higher education and smart people to attend great universities without having to worry about money. and the relief off parents wow! what do you think?
(im asking here because of the teens having to choose colleges soon and parents worrying about costs)

Now that I’ve read that, the English system does seem less stressful. I never attended a four year university because although I was accepted for 4 different schools, I never went because I couldnt afford it all myself (and the loans I could have gotten wouldnt have covered it all, even added to the scholarships I already had) and my parents were a bit financially stressed because my older sister had just graduated from college which they helped pay for and my little brother was starting college which they were also going to help pay for. So I didnt want to put that extra burden on them. I fully intend to go once I’m more financially sound but that may be a while. Maybe I should move to England and apply for citizenship there.
By the way, I’m not sure how much it would cost to go to Harvard but its a lot. My sister and brother went to a less prestigious college and it cost I think ,000 a year or more.

I pay $21,000/year for my school. I have to take out private loans for almost all of it. When I pay it back, I have to pay back the original amount plus interest. Interest rates are sky-high here. In the end, I’ll be $100,000 in debt, I’d guess.
I went to a state college before and only paid about $16,000/year. Community colleges (2 year colleges) are really cheap though and only cost about $4,000/ year. Harvard costs upwards of $45,000/year.
College costs are ridiculous, and with the way the economy is here, people probably aren’t going to be able to get student loans soon, which means less people will be able to go to college. The English system sounds good to me!

I’m from Ireland and i only pay €1050 per year that’s the standard rate. It seems far less stressful than the English system.

I’m Scottish, and don’t have to pay anything to go to Uni here. However, the course I want to do doesn’t run much in Scottish Universities, so most Uni’s I’ve applied to are in England. The fee’s are scary, leaving school with debt is so unappealing. I would would turn down the opportunity to do a perfect course in England if I got accepted to the one I’m applying to in Scotland, mainly because it’s so expensive to go down South.
It’s good that the Government is making it possible for people to go to Uni, especially as even if you can’t afford to take out a loan you can get bursery’s or grants, but I’ve become used to thinking of University as free! Some people are put off that they have to pay at all, because gaining debt is such a stressful thing to take on. Now that it’s come down to it I find the English system pretty stressful because I’ll have to take out a pretty huge loan on top of my savings to pay for three years!
So it really does affect the way I’m choosing Universities, but Scotland’s not going to be able to pay for everyone to attend Uni for much longer. It’s sad that the Government can’t pay for everyone, but hopefully Universities will receive more state and private funding so that fee’s can go down.
