I am graduating with a degree in mechanical engineering in 3 semesters. How tough is the market right now? I didn’t do any internships yet..

Engineering is one of the more in demand fields, even during recessions. You were smart to pick it. If you keep your grades up and do an internship, you stand a very good shot at getting a job in your field when you graduate.
If the recession is still going strong when you’re graduating, I still think you’ll find a job; the things you might need to compromise on are location and perhaps exactly what sort of company you work for. For example, if you’d hoped to work in, say, auto manufacturing, you may need to be more flexible and also consider jobs for medical device companies. Or if you’d hoped to find work in (pretend) Kearney, Nebraska, where you are from, you may actually need to look in Omaha.
But based on how MEs have performed in past big recessions, I think you will find a job.
However, as you probably already know, that internship is important. Do not skip it. No matter how short it is, doesn’t matter if it’s paid or not – do an internship or co-op.
