My dad always taught me “you are where you go”
thats why I chose Cornell, there are companies who will hire me on the sole basis that I am a Cornell Grad, there are job functions where only Ivy League people are invited, because I chose Cornell (over Notre Dame) I have entered into that world, that circle
The alumni of your school (depending on how good the school) really determine the outcome of what is basically your life
It is very important that you choose the best college that will set you up to be the most successful when you get out of that college
In the law side of things, it is important because there are many schools with pre-law programs but the best ones have kids who come out and take the LSAT and do great because the school set them up well. The rigor in the law program set you up to be successful and have no problem getting into law school
If you think of colleges as flags, some flags are bigger than others, and when you come out and wave your flag, who is going to pick you up?
In short, you are where you go.

Work at doing something you’re going to enjoy in college so you can get a job in something you enjoy. That satisfaction should be a reward greater than the amount of income you get.
Facts are facts though… if it’s only salary you’re after (I feel bad for you) but yes, a diploma from a “top college” will probably offer you more opportunities in that department.

Going to a top college might give you a tiny edge over others but in the end, it all boils down to what you actually did in college such as internships and research.

honestly you make the best of your education. there are big well known universities with exacerbated reputations and an overwhelmingly expensive, but it truly is the effort that you put into your class work at any university that makes going to college worth it.
so to answer your question, sometimes the reputation of a college is what may matter to your employer, but in the bigger picture it is what you take from your education that makes you a better person. some college students go as far as what the curriculum requires but if you want to enrich your educational experience you will go steps beyond what is asked of you.
