how do you go about picking a college?
Question by gimme2kiss: how do you go about picking a college?
its so stressful! i will be taking my sat/act tests next month, and my parents are starting to urge me into choosing colleges to apply to. this is very hard since i have no idea what i want to major in, and i havent even taken the act/sats yet. but even so, i have NO CLUE how to even go about narrowing it down! i guess i could start by location…i live in ohio but i plan on going away. maybe somewhere like north carolina or virginia? i know there is one college in LA that i could get into, but that might be a bit too far for me. what do you reccomend i do? should i just wait till i get my act/sat scores before i try to make any decisions?? help!

go to www.collegeboard.com & there is a quiz-like thing that allows you state your preferences and they tell you which colleges would suite you. don’t stress about it too much…but keep in mind that north carolina and Virginia is a completely different lifestyle than ohio. and don’t worry about choosing a major yet, you can be undeclared until your sophomore year of college usually. but it’s a good idea to have a general idea of what you want to do…or at least choose a college that has A LOT of majors so that when you choose something- the college you decided on will have that major. good luck!

First try the web site below. Then get the magazine Kaplans Newsweek How To Get Into College 2010. Your public library will have a lot of information about colleges
You need to do research and that takes time. Go to the school’s web site. Look through it. You should be going to college visit with your parents. We started when my daughter was a sophomore. By the beginning of her senior year we had gone to 8 colleges. She knew pretty much that a smaller school was better for her. On our visits we would take a campus tour, meet with admissions, eat in the dining hall, meet with other students. And since she knew her major and minor, we met with professors from those departments.Visit at least one large college and one small one. You may not be able to visit a college in CA, but do go to some around you.
