How Do You Choose A College?

I will be attending college in the fall of 2009 and my school is making us apply to at least one college before our winter break. The problem is that I’m not sure where I want to go to college. There are so many colleges in the US and I cant figure out where to go!

First question: Are you wanting to stay in state or go out of state?
I stayed in state, so much easier for parent’s help.
Secondly: Any major ideas? Do you know what you want to be?
Only some colleges have certain majors.
Third: Does your GPA qualify for that college? Did you take the SAT/ACT? Do those scores qualify?
Some colleges are so much harder to get into than some. Make sure you have a chance.
Does it cost money to apply?
You can apply to multiple colleges, check and see if it’s free or if you have to pay with your application if it’s just a school project and you really aren’t sure at this time.
    Hope this helps!

think about the area that the college is located. think about what you are going to major in, and then do research on that particular department at different schools. Ex. if you want to major in Pre-Med, check out the biology and chemistry departments at different schools… you could choose the ones that have the best. Also, think about whether you would like a large class or a small class. most larger state universitys have large classes, where as smaller ones have smaller classes. this is not a general rule, and you would have to find out for sure by the university’s website to determine class size. Some colleges also have curfews and rules that do not permit freshman to drive. If you don’t want that, then find out which universitys have those policies. Give cost some thought. who will be paying for it? if you are, then make sure its a college you can afford. If it’s your parents, make sure it’s a college they can afford… if you going on scholarships, then go crazy and pick the one you really want!
it’s always cheaper to go to college in-state, by the way.
also, check out some extra’s… what sports are offered? what clubs? is there a mall nearby?
I applied to FSU (florida state), UMD (univer of maryland) Snow college in Utah, and the university of california (berkley) and dozens more… I chose to go to UMD because they offered me the most money in grants to attend.
    good luck on college hunting!

First, you need to decide what you can afford. Private schools are more expensive than public schools. If you prefer smaller campuses where you can get more individual attention, private is the way to go, but it’s also more expensive. See which schools are within your budget. Also, apply for scholarships and when the time gets closer, also apply for financial aid.
You should also think about whether you want to go away to school, or go to one that is close to home. Even if you go to a school that is close to where you live, you can still dorm there to get the college experience and still go home if there is an emergency or you get homesick.
And last but not least, see what schools will accept your GPA and SAT/ACT test scores.

Look for what career you want to get into, then that should narrow it down a little.
Then take into consideration how much money you have, how much you can get/make, how far away from home it is, how and where you are going to live, can you afford it, etc! So much to consider, but once you take in all these things, you will be able to decide where you want to go.

well first of all the best starting point is pick a region. Do you want to be far from home or close (I suggest farther than 200 miles)? It depends on your grades and your major. I mean there is a big difference between undecided, engineering, and english majors and the school that is right for you. A State University is always a good starting point as well. If you are really unsure…apply to a bunch and visit all of them as well. That is the best way, go there and see which ones you like.

Well you have numerous of things to look at. Do you like the environment? Do you want to live on campus? Can you afford it? Does it offer you independence? Where its located, does it have your major… the list can go on. As you may be able to tell, I have ran through these questions myself when choosing a college of my choice. http://collegesearch.collegeboard.com/se…
