How Do I Even Start To Choose A College?

College Selection
I went to this college planning night at my high school, and it was really supposed to make us feel more at ease with the process, but it really just confused me. They were talking about how we need to know what we want, but I don’t know what I want! How are we supposed to know what we want at seventeen? I was just wondering if there were any tips on how to start looking at colleges and narrowing them down.

Research? I am in the same boat as you. I started out by eliminating the colleges I know I do NOT want to go to. My list has about twenty-five schools on it now, and there are more left. Hope we can both figure it out before our senior year when we have to send in our decisions to the universities. :/ good luck!
EDIT: some of the websites I have been searching helped me out because they were not from the school, so they were less biased:
mychances.net
theU.com <– REALLY GOOD! it has stats that are random but matter (hot guys/girls, food, hard or easy profs, etc) my favorite
collegeconfidential.com
you could also buy or check out some of the books by collegeboard.

I’m in the same boat you are and I would say make a list of what you want your college to be, like close to home a couple hours away or if u can go out of state. Also the setting rural or urban. Look at some of the colleges in your state an go visit them see what you like and what you don’t. Also your interests and majors make sure the college has them. I visited with family and a friend and me and my friend were able to explore by ourselve which madenus undertand what it would be like more by ourselves.good luck:)

Pick 3-5 things you could see yourself doing with your life, find a school that has all or most of those offered, taking into account the distance from your home if that matters to you. Then look into other things like what the dorms are like, what’s the crime like in the town, what is there to do in town, is their public transportation, how big are the classes, etc etc. Just pick whatever sounds best, and whenever possible, visit a college youre considering and take a tour. You get TONS of great information that way.
