Right now is a tough time as you have many experienced IT people on the street seeking work. As an employer I would likely pick someone with experience.
Getting a job is always a question of who you know more than what you know. You need to get out in the IT world and make yourself known. If there are operating system user groups in your area Windows, LINUX or UNIX be sure to start attending those meetings. Microsoft has free seminars in most major metro areas. Be sure to attend those if your interest is Windows. Volunteering at churches, schools, senior centers all gets you exposure to people who may know someone who knows someone.
The last option is to go the military route and specialize in IT. There are a lot of companies that like EX military folks like Boeing and others.

Have you talked to any campus advisers? I go to school at the University of Washington and the CSE advisers here are big on getting students jobs at Yahoo, Microsoft, Google, you name it. If you just want to make a name for yourself, a good way to get experience is through open-source projects like Ubuntu, Perl, etc. You won’t make any money working on one of those, but it’s a great thing to put on a resume and not that big of a time commitment. I personally was given funding last summer to work on Sage, the open-source mathematics software program, which I really enjoyed.
