Actually I’m thinking how’s that possible because no college dance program that requires a solo as part of an audition would impose such a strange music requirement. As Laci implies in her response, the point of such an exercise would be to showcase what YOU are good at, so the applicant would be the one to pick the dance style and the music that goes with it.
Columbia College, that you mentioned before, does not require any audition for admission. You are only required to complete a level-placement audition at Orientation or the beginning of the semester, and that would simply involve taking a dance class.
I just wanted to make sure you got the audition instructions correct.
—> Response to Additional Details:
I looked up the application for Columbia College’s Presidential Scholarship and, based on the supplemental details for dance submissions, I can see quite plainly that you’re not interpreting the instructions correctly.
It says, “A video of a 2-5 minute solo dance piece that you choreographed yourself. Your dance should demonstrate your artistry and inventiveness in this art form.”
The basis of this art form is TECHNIQUE, not lyrics in a song. You need to start with a style that you can perform well enough so that you’re comfortable enough incorporating your own moves into that style. The music could be anything from classical to simple drumming to anything in between. The point is to select music that will help highlight your preferred dance style, since you’re also asked to add a brief essay that explains how the solo “relates to your future development as a Dance Major…” So the SONG doesn’t describe you; it’s your MOVEMENT that is supposed to describe you. You’re supposed to communicate through your dancing, not let someone else’s words do the communicating for you.
If you don’t want to take my word for it, I would strongly advise you to consult your dance teachers. But since you mentioned in your other question that you’d like to do Broadway-style dancing, then that is the perfect place to start. How about choosing a song from something like “Lion King” and choreographing to that? (Remember you’ll need to edit the music down to 2-5 minutes.)

I also want to draw your attention to the Eligibility Criteria on the first page of the application where they say that students must:
“Submit documented samples of their own creative work that demonstrate strong accomplishment, talent or ability in their intended major.”
This is further evidence that the emphasis is on technique and showing what you have accomplished in a particular dance style.
