Northern Virginia and Washington DC. There are MANY of job annoucements for these areas. Yes the cost of living is higher in the area so the pay is slightly higher. Base pay and locality pays for all U.S. areas can be found on http://www.opm.gov

America, like Canada where I’m from, is facing and aging population probnlem. In British Columbia, 45% of the managers and 35% of the employees will retire by the year 2015.
You shouldn’t have much trouble getting in,, no matter which state you choose.

For the US government positions – 2 facts.
1. To be brought on as a FTE (full time employee) your college degree will get you a GS-5 position, unless you are a lawyer, doctor, accountant, etc.
2. Most of the people being ‘hired’ now by government agencies (thanks to the elephants) are contractors. That is, they contract with firms who provide people to do the job. The government pays the firm/agency, and the employee gets paid by the firm/agency. You might want to look at that entry also. If you are in a contract position, you will be in place to get an FTE whenever the farris wheel goes around again.
