College Tutoring
I have OCD but I would really like to go to college. What kind of help would there be? Could I get tutors?

you are disabled because of OCD, are you joking? I have permament nerve injuries, brain damage, back issues and a bad neck, that is a real disability.

It really depends on the severity of your OCD and the programs offered though your university.
Many universities have Writing centres or Tutoring centres where Grad students or senior students offer their time or are paid by the university to provide free assistance.
Contact your student union or Student Disability centre and find out where these places are and if they arrange one on one or small group sessions.
My university would offer a private room for students who had disabilities or medical conditions that made it difficult or impossible to write their tests and exams in the class room.
This might be another thing to ask about. Although you will likely need a letter from a doctor or therapist in order to have access to this service.
University libraries will have private study rooms if you need a blank quiet place free of distraction to do papers or study.
Find out if your university has a society or club for students with disabilities, it may be helpful to meet other students with OCD and find out what methods they use to get though university.

No he is not joking=OCD canbe very debilitating–at the worst–people are home bound
depemnding on teh college you go to–you can expect accommodatiosn under 504/ADA
ADA applies to most colleges–except religiously affiliated
403 applies to any college taht receives federal money
you can ask not to be penalized for absences or lateness
you can have arrangements made to get class notes when you can’t make it to class–you may get extar time for assignments tests
be sure to contact the disability services office to make formal arrangements-
if you ahve a hard time getting out in teh morning–maybe priority scheduling so you can get your class es scattered in the afternoon or evening
OCD CAN BE MORE DEBILIATTAING TAHN MANY PHYSICAL DISABILITIES

Many people have OCD and manage to make it through college. I did. I don’t know how much help you can get. I’m sure there are programs in place, but OCD doesn’t fit the image of a “true” disability. Your going to have to be pretty persuasive. Chances there are people with more “traditional” disabilities that are higher on the pecking order for aid/help.

This is something to consider when choosing a college, as some have more accommodations than others. At my university, we have “learning centered communities” which are dormitory communities that offer extra support to students with disabilities or other challenges. These communities have more attentive staff and a calmer atmosphere that is more conducive to study than other dormitories.
You also want to join Student Support Services, which offers extra assistance in getting accommodations in your classes, hosts special events and trips, provides free tutoring and even awards scholarships. They can help you find a job on campus and can help you find a career after you graduate.
In every class I have taken, the first day was spent going over the course syllabus and the last part of the syllabus was the ADA statement, at which time the instructor would invite anyone who needed accommodation to visit with him/her after class.
All in all, I think you will find college to be a much more supportive environment than high school. You will be very glad you went to college, as it is incredibly difficult for someone with a mental disability to succeed in a low-skilled job.

You can pay people to tutor you but the college will not and cannot offer you much in the way of special treatment.
