The choice of a college is heavily influenced by the student’s interest in one or more particular fields of study. First, the schools considered have to offer majors in the right areas. Then the quality of those programs can be considered. Although this is a subjective process at heart, some information can be derived from data like the number of faculty positions committed to the department offering the major, the number of graduates from the program who go on to graduate or professional schools, and program/college rankings from external sources such as U.S. News, The Princeton Review and others.

After the academic questions are answered, there are other factors that will help focus the decision. Because you are committing to where you’re going to live for four years when you choose a college, one important consideration is the setting of the school, i.e., should it be in a big city, a small town or something in between? Another important factor is the geographic location of the school. You will be living with the climate of the are literally every day. The distance from the student’s home is also significant, since most students make at least 1-2 trips home per academic year, not counting a return home for summer break.

Finally, the costs of attending a particular college should be reviewed. Although a school should not be eliminated just on the basis on costs, this step can streamline the process of choosing among admissions and aid offers once they are received.
