College/university Students, What Are The Most Important Considerations In Choosing A School?

College Selection
Please note: I mean after the main one of courses, teachers, academic status etc. I mean more of the social aspects.
What do you wish you could change about your choice and why?

Mine was money..
I couldn’t afford to go straight to a University right after High school. I was getting loans, but I didn’t want to take loans for general coursework which every student has to do.
I went to community college for 2 years and paid only $20 per unit for the same course work. I transferred out to Cal state Long beach for the last 2 years.
I am so glad, I didn’t go straight to a University because I don’t have any student loans. I am making over $70,000 a year.

I wish that I hadn’t gone to a city-based, large college.

My top considerations were:
1. Availability of the major(s) I wanted
2. Geographic location
3. School reputation
4. Price
5. Availability of clubs and extracurriculars that interested me
6. Physical appearance of the campus
7. Personal “fit” based on the feeling I got from the school
I ended up going to Yale, and was happy with my choice. I don’t think I would have changed anything.

For me, the feeling of community was very important. You usually feel there is more of a community in colleges with a central campus–not an urban one. Many students who feel ‘lost’ attend schools like NYU and UPenn, where the dorms are very spread out and there is no real campus. At my school, there is one large “green” where, in the fall and spring, everyone hangs out together.
I also looked at the party scene. I didn’t want a huge school where partying is important–usually those schools are the ones with an active Greek life, and having a Greek life can alienate people, since you are in or you’re out.
