Can you explain this joke about college?

College Selection
There was a comedy that came out in the 1980’s called How I Got Into College. It’s about this guy who is struggling to find a college to go to. During one of the scenes, he is speaking to a counselor or friend or something about his decision to follow this girl to school. He says, “People choose colleges for all kinds of idiotic reasons, like fraternities and Slavic language departments.” It was supposed to be funny, but I don’t understand the Slavic language part. Is there a joke that Slavic languages are a waste to study or something?

No, just that it’s such an “out there” language and people think they’re cool for taking it

The joke is that he picked his school based on where his girl was going rather than an actual program or something that the school offers.

Actually studying any language, even English, does not lead to a job and are considered “personal enrichment” degrees that do not lead to a job. And a degree these days that does not lead to a job is useless. Therefore he would have chosen a school because of this department that awarded useless degrees. It is a form of irony.
