Yes they are. You should get the new dell minis there like only 400 dollars. And they come in different colors. Dell is very affordable .

I understand that you are looking for a cheap reliable computer. I recommend AGAINST dell. the parts are extremely cheap and flimsy and i can think of three people i know who have had issues with their dell laptops bursting into flames. the exclusion to this is if you front the insane amounts of cash for one of their high-end gaming laptops
Apple is the best choice, but yes they are expensive. the apple website has a page which sells refurbished laptops at a reduced price. these are often practically new computers that had been returned to apple within the 30 day grace period after purchase for one of any number of reasons. also, an apple product is one of the safest operating systems when it comes to viruses.
HP is a good portable brand that will serve you well for its price and has some added features that are a great plus for college life. slim and light with a good battery life plus strong media capabilities make this an excellent choice .
sony is also good, but a bit more expensive.
toshiba laptops are a bit scary. their cases aren’t built to vent the cpu properly and they tend to overheat. they are also bulky
Acer is good, but a bit too much of a processing powerhouse for what you need. battery life is marginal.
i haven’t seen a gateway that runs windows properly.
the choice is up to you in the end, but do yourself a favor and get the 2 or 3 year accidental damage protection. you never know when your roommate will walk in and knock over a bottle of water on your keyboard or trip over your power cable and sent the thing flying across the room.

The guy above me who said “Dell’s are more reliable than Macs” Is wrong. Macs have been proven to last a lot longer than an average windows based laptop. Macs maybe more expensive but in the long run are better for college students.
