Typically, the higher ed discount is $100 for most MacBooks except the low end model usually gets $50 off.
For the past several years Apple has been promoting a free iPod with computer purchase (Mac Minis excluded). This promotion usually runs from August to September.
Having said this, there are a handful of colleges where the discounts are steeper than others. By last count, around five or six. The bookstore at my university was selling new MacBooks (MB061LL/B) for $749 at the end of fall term.
Do check Apple’s site for both the college you plan to attend or for colleges near your home. Though you may not be attending their school, many stores can get an eligibility exception from their regional Apple rep to sell hardware to students and staff from other colleges.

You would have to check buy normally the maximum is about 10% although they would probably sell you the MacBook and throw in an iPod instead.
