Any advise for a recent college graduate having trouble finding a job in a new place?
Hello, i’m a recent college graduate with a B.A. in Communication/Concentration in Mass Comm. Shortly after graduating I decided to quit my college job(working as a cook at a restaurant) to move right away to the Charlotte area to be closer to my girl friend(previously we were long distance). I arrived in mid December and i’ve been staying with my dad, who lives around Charlotte. When I got here I immediately started looking for a job. I applied at all types of jobs and thought i’d be pretty satisfied if even if a smaller kind of job was offered.
I did get an interview with a restaurant where they were hiring server’s assistants for the front. After attending the interview I later found out I was passed over for someone else. After thinking about it I came to realize that maybe I made it sound like I was just looking for something/anything and perhaps they would be afraid i’d leave them as soon as another opportunity came my way and perhaps they were afraid they wouldn’t be able to offer me the time on the clock I desired. Perhaps with a BA I was overqualified? Later, I received an interview opportunity to be a hospital registrar. After attending the interview I felt it went well but then a few days later I was informed I didn’t get the job. I now find myself in early February looking for anything I can find. I’ve applied for all kinds of jobs, ones related to my degree and ones that aren’t. I feel like maybe i’m either overqualified with a BA for smaller jobs or under-qualified for the larger ones. I feel like if I had stayed where I originally was(Louisiana) maybe I could have had better luck, maybe getting being able to get a job much sooner as potential employers would have been more familiar with the smaller college I attended. I hope I don’t come to regret my decision to move. Any advise or insight on what I should do? Thanks!

I’m in the same boat right now. I just graduated six months ago with a B.F.A in Electronic Media, and a Minor in Business. But now I’m stuck working part-time at a retail store since that’s all that I could find. I’ve been looking on Careerbuilder, Monster, SimplyHired, HotJobs. I feel like any job search engine there is I’ve been there looking.
I’ve had three job interviews for work in my field, and all of them have come with the employer picking someone else. The problem that I see right now is a) company’s still are not hiring due to the economy b) most people right out of college (myself included) are lacking the experience that these employers are asking for because c) the job market is ridiculously over saturated with an older working population with years of experience on recent college graduates. A company can now how a choice of whomever they want because everyone is so desperate for jobs.
In all honesty, when I applied for jobs that I knew were only part-time and were not going to be my career but were something to get me by. I actually made a separate resume for those employers with all the side jobs that I had while in college (there were tons pizza driver, server, retail) and that way my professional resume didn’t give them those apprehensions about hiring me. Fortunately I lucked out and have had my part-time job for a few months now.
That’s all I can really think right now. I believe that anywhere is a bad time right now, and you’re move wont dramatically effect your job potential. And should probably make you happier since you’re closer to your girlfriend. I know I’ve been looking in Cincinnati a lot more so I can could be closer to mine; however, I live in Ohio and have been bouncing back and forth between Cincinnati and Columbus since I have parents living in both places and it has helped tremendously because I have a larger area to look. Anything that you can use to your advantage such as that is greatly beneficial I’ve found.
Either way good luck. It sucks out there, and I keep thinking if I can get that one chance I can prove myself to whatever company wants would higher me. It’s just getting your foot in the door that is the worse part.
